AROUND TANGLEWOOD

Around Tanglewood Writer

One of the drawbacks of living a thousand miles away from ones family is not being with them during those emotional holidays: Christmas and Thanksgiving. Someone once quipped, “That’s what they made airplanes for.” This is true and in theory it is comforting to know Wisconsin is only two and half hours away with a direct Midwest Airline flight. In practice, however, it isn’t always covenant or financially possible to jump on an airplane especially at a time of the year when both the volume of the traffic and the price of the tickets are at their peak. Driving there—although a pleasant experience in the summer—might not be such a good idea given the unpredictable weather patterns of fall and winter. Living in Tanglewood, however, we found Thanksgiving can really be something to be thankful for in our home away from home.

THE HOBBY SPOTLIGHT

Hobby Modler

It’s not surprising that Jim Maynard enjoys playing softball, as he was raised in a sports family. His father was a teacher and coach of many sports.

Jim’s sport was hockey, but he participated in all sports including fast pitch softball. He also coached little league baseball and hockey.

Read more here about Jim's hobby.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

In The Spotlight

Our resident in the spotlight for December takes the concept of “Tanglewood Time” to extremes! If chairs are to be set up at 6:30, it’s done by 6:00! If cards start at 7:00 P.M., he’s there at 6:30! Additionally, his picture hangs in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York; and he carries the unofficial title of the “Exterminator for the Rich and Famous!”

So lets go to the  Resident In The Spotlight and learn more about Dick Miller...

THE POET'S CORNER

Poet's Corner

This is an example of formatting in a poem where the arrangement of the words add to the message of the poem. We witnessed the events in this poem with our kids in the back seat of our car.  We never forgot what we saw.

RECIPE CORNER

Recipe Corner

Cookies, cookies, cookies! I love the holidays and all the ‘special’ foods that come with it….you know, all those traditional foods you only eat once or twice a year, or all those ‘goodies’ only Grandma could make.

Now that most of us are the Grandmas, we have the opportunity to pass on our favorite recipes to our families so they might taste the traditions of the past, and we also have the opportunity to make some traditions of our own.

I have perused my magazines and cookbooks this month to find some interesting, and different, recipes to try this year. I hope you find one or two for yourselves to try.

If you have any recipes you’d like to share, please submit them to recipecorner@twrtimes.com. I’ll make sure they get in next month’s issue.

We headed down US 27 to the old Kash n’ Karry supermarket. What a delightful surprise to see a great makeover with vibrant new colors, new names and new products.
