Jim Maynard

Softball

It’s not surprising that Jim Maynard enjoys playing softball, as he was raised in a sports family. His father was a teacher and coach of many sports.

Jim’s sport was hockey, but he participated in all sports including fast pitch softball. He also coached little league baseball and hockey.

Jim Getting Ready to Play Softball

Jim has been married to his lovely wife, Joan, for forty-five years. They have four girls and a boy, seven grandchildren & two step-grandchildren. After serving in the United States Marine Corps, he worked in Rhode Island at the Providence Journal newspaper for 41 years.

In November 2005, the couple settled in Tanglewood. Jim recalls, “We liked the beauty and the many activities Tanglewood had to offer plus the fact Joan’s brother, Jim Hebert, also lives in Tanglewood.”

Last December Jim joined an over 65-softball league and admired how good these men were. Although not tall, Jim plays first base, as he can field well and catch the balls thrown from the fielder. Since it was the team’s first year, they “borrowed” uniforms from a restaurant (Luby’s) that no longer exists.

There are leagues for over 55, over 65, and a new league for over 70. Contact numbers are in the sports section of "Highlands Today".

For the over 65 league, special rules apply. These include no sliding, run by on all bases, and no tagging. Yes, there are a few pulled muscles and bruises as the players try to play the way they did 40 years ago. But a good time is had by all. Jim recalls, “We played Tuesdays and Thursdays a total of 24 games and it was a great time, meeting and playing with men from different states.

Jim's Softball Team

“I enjoy fishing and hope to participate in more activities in Tanglewood, also looking forward to softball season.”
