PICKLEBALL
Pickleball is a slowed down game of tennis played on a small court with paddles and a whiffle ball.
This is a popular game in retirement communities. There are 50 courts in the Villages. There are
5 courts in Solavita. We have heard of several other communities with one or two courts.
Because the ball is so light, we have no reported cases of tennis elbow or shoulder problems.
We have now been playing pickleball for almost 3 months. We are all still beginners; so if you have never played please do not feel intimidated. Just show up and we will teach you the rules. We have paddles and balls so there is nothing to buy, unless you choose to buy
your own paddle as some of us have.
Our schedule has not changed, but you should know that you can play anytime. The paddles and balls are stored in the shuffleboard shed.
The scheduled playtime is on a "drop in" basis. This means you can show up anytime and we will fit you in. We have two courts and we play doubles, so 8 people can play at one time. The courts are located in the bash area behind the pool.
The schedule is:
Monday after coffee
Monday 1pm-3pm
Wednesday 9am-11am
Saturday 9am-11am
If none of these times fit your schedule, and you have a couple of friends who would like to try the game,
please give me a call and I will arrange a time to show you the game and explain the rules.
TENNIS - SUZANNE GOLDMAN
Our Tennis Players enjoyed an excellent Tournament with the Reflections Retirement Community on Feb 5, 2007. The format permitted all levels of players to participate. We will host them in 2008.
New players continue to come and we continue to play and enjoy the camaraderie and the sport.
Suzanne Goldman was elected the new Chair of the Tennis Committee and will be happy to talk with anyone about our program. She can be reached at 382-3575.
SHUFFLEBOARD DOUG SCHOLL
We are having a great February in spite of several cold days. Our shufflers lost to Sebring Village 13-19, beat Reflections 20-12, and tromped on Adelaide Shores 25 - 7. We have our In-Park tournament coming up on Saturday the 24th.
Coming up in March we play at Adelaide Shores on March 2nd, at Sebring Village on March 7th and at Reflections on March 16, closing out this season with an In-Park Tournament on March 24th. I will provide the "news" with a year-end wrap up of all our games for the April issue.
I was so proud of the 30 Shufflers that played in the "Cancer Benefit" dedicated in memory of Noel Wagner, one of our on shufflers, who passed away this season. These 30 Shufflers pulled $361.00 out of their own pockets for this fund raising event and played on the coldest day this season.
